Information

Problems with your digestion? These could be the causes

Digestive problems and constipation can happen at any age, but the causes will often vary depending on the different stages in life. A healthy diet, drinking plenty of water and taking regular exercise are important factors for aiding your digestive system and preventing symptoms.

Infants
Digestive problems in infants are often caused by an immature gut microbiome, changes in diet, dehydration and food intolerances. Their digestive system is still developing, and this can lead to constipation particularly when solid foods are first introduced.

Toddlers and children
Toddlers and children often have digestive problems caused by low-fibre diets, lack of exercise, dehydration, stress and changes, as well as irregular toilet habits. These factors can easily lead to constipation.

Schoolchildren and adults
With schoolchildren and adults, digestive problems are often caused by low-fibre diets, dehydration, lack of exercise, stress, medication and chronic disorders. These lifestyle and health factors impact on bowel function and lead to constipation.
